About

Hi, I'm Brian Boatright.

I've been getting paid to write code since I was 18. My first job was a 1990 Alpha Four database app for DOS that tracked limousine mileage. It paid $450, and it taught me that someone, somewhere, will pay you to solve a real problem with software.

A few years later in college, I wrote a Perl script that rotated banner ads and tracked clicks — this was 1993, when banner ads were a new idea and Perl was how you made the web do anything interesting. By 1996 I was building PHP sites for BizSticker.com, selling vinyl graphics on the early commercial web.

In 2002 I co-founded Eyespike Corporation, a services company specializing in design, development, and marketing. We're still at it more than two decades later.

Why this book

I'm excited about what Bun does. It collapses the JavaScript stack — runtime, package manager, bundler, test runner — into one fast tool, without trading away performance to get there. You can build a real app with Bun's built-ins, deploy it to a small VPS, and watch it fly. Less sprawl. More speed. Fewer dependencies to babysit.

That's worth teaching. So I wrote this book.

If you want to know more about my non-tech life — combat robotics, the foundation — that lives over at briankb.com.
